The "practice-a-thon" will come to an end on Friday, May 7. Every child in 5th grade plays a musical instrument, the recorder, and should be practicing at home every night. The money raised from the "practice-a-thon" will go towards funding our Saint Anne School music program. These instruments and teachers are not free. Money needs to be raised to purchase instruments and a significant amount of time is dedicated towards keeping this program running. Each student should bring in no less than $1. This is a way to show our appreciation for all the hard work and time that the music teachers have put into this wonderful program!!

You may or may not have heard from your children that we are sending letters to Spain. I have a friend who is teaching English to 5th and 6th grade students in Siles, Spain. She would like them to have more opportunities to read and write English. We have spent two weeks writing and rewriting our letters. The letters are packaged up with our favorite candy and ready to be shipped off! Hopefully we will be able to correspond with our pen pals at least one more time prior to the end of the school year. This is very exciting!

Building Language Arts Skills

Grade 5 Tips for Parents

• You should try to do some reading with your child on a regular basis. By now you know that as your child moves forward through the grades, his or her schedule becomes more active and self-initiated. You have probably find that it is not as easy as it once was to engage in daily reading together. At a minimum, though, try to spend some time on Sunday afternoons or evenings to read from authors such as Charles Dickens, Robert Louis Stevenson, James Fenimore Cooper, Charlotte Bronte, Jack London, Langston Hughes, Virginia Sneve, Bret Harte, Alex Haley, or Louisa May Alcott, Edith Hamilton, C.S. Lewis, Sally Benson, or Paul Laurence Dunbar. Your child's interest in the stories you read will tell you a great deal about his or her development in listening and comprehension.

• Begin making a journal of good times together -- possibly the highlights of a trip, vacation, or family holiday. You and your child can each make entries. Read through what you have written from time to time.

• Read newspaper headlines together and try to figure out what the story is about. You might also make a point of reading aloud to each other one newspaper story every day. This will help make the newspaper important to your child, as well as provide reading practice. Moreover, it does not take a great deal of time.

• Get in the habit of clipping from the newspaper things you think your child might find interesting -- human interest stories, cartoons, news related to the local environment. Such pieces are natural starting points for conversation.

• Committing things to memory is a good exercise throughout the intermediate and middle school years. Each of you memorize a poem or story to tell to the other -- one in the fall and one in the spring. The presentations can be family events.

• Buy books for your child for special occasions. This is a way to tell your child that you value reading and ideas. It also gives you a chance to build later conversations around the books you have bought, by asking, "How was the book? What was the mystery?" and the like.

• As your child reads, find time to ask, "What is the book about? Who are the characters? What are they like? Where does the story take place?" Most children like to talk about what they are reading, as long as they do not perceive the questions to be either suspicious inquisitions or rote inquiries devoid of real interest.

• Take your child to the movies occasionally -- rather than just sending him or her to the movies. You will not only enjoy the outing together, but the event will give you a natural opportunity for conversation about the film's character, setting, theme, moral dilemmas, and so on.

• Each of you write an explanation of how to do something. For example, your child might decide to write a description of how to ride a bike while you will describe how to swim. Then see if your descriptions make sense to one another. Would your child's explanation help someone ride a bike for the first time?

Building Math Skills

Grade 5 Tips for Parents

• The more concrete the learning and the more children are encouraged to see mathematics in use all around them, the better. You can help by using math and the language of math around the house. Have your child help you with measuring tasks such as placing a picture on the wall, cutting out a pattern, building shelves, or papering a wall.

• Get your child to make estimates and judgments about distance and time, and play a lot of number-oriented games. Math is a natural area of learning that should always be interesting to children.

• Ask your child, "How might we go about estimating how fast an ant moves?"

• Together make a graph of the colors and makes of cars in a parking lot. Try it at several different times. Based on the data shown in your graphs, make a generalization about what you might find if you continued your observations at a later time.

• Play tic-tac-toe, dots, checkers, dominoes, concentration, hangman, Scrabble, chess, and increasingly complex card games such as hearts, rummy, and cribbage with your child. All involve problem solving and logic, and all are based on mathematics.

• With a map of the United States, ask, "What is the shortest route from Nutley, New Jersey, to Rochester, Minnesota?" Or have your child figure out how long it would take to get to the homes of relatives and friends around the country -- or the world -- by plane, train, automobile, or on foot.

• Ask, "How could we figure out how tall our house it? What about a tree, or a telephone pole?"

• Try out problems such as, "If you ran 40 yards in 12 seconds, how many feet did you cover per second?" Or "If you continued to run at the same speed, how long would it take you to run 70 yards? Or 240 yards? How about 800 yards?"

• Make up problems. For example: "It takes us 2 hours and 10 minutes to get to Aunt Maryann's house if we average 50 miles an hour. How long would it take if we went 35 miles an hour?"

• The calculator should be very familiar to your child. Using a calculator, pick a number such as 39, then take turns adding a number from 1 to 5 into the memory. The objective is to see who can get to 39 first. This is a good mental math task and also another way to use the calculator.

Building Science Skills

Grade 5 Tips for Parents

• When you see a living creature on a walk, on television, or in a book or movie, classify it as an amphibian, mammal, bird, reptile, fish, insect, or crustacean. If you are not sure of a particular creature's category, research it together in a directory, encyclopedia, or animal book.

• Observe the moon together over several weeks; note whether you are looking at it at the same time every day or at different times. (You and your child could do this exercise once a year for several years -- perhaps at a different season each year -- and learn something new each time.) Note the moon's location and draw its various shapes; be aware of the stars around it. Examine the moon chart in the weather section of your daily newspaper or on a calendar. There is almost no end to the astronomical observations you and your child can make. If, like many parents, you are not especially familiar with the sky, this exercise will be a good learning experience for you as well as for your child.

• Ask about the scientists your child is currently studying. Are men and women represented? What about people of color? What does your child know about these scientists and their work?

• Your child is learning about life in the oceans. See what your child can tell you about the following topics: whether there is more water or land on our planet; what kinds of plants and animals live in the different parts of the oceans; what we know about the ocean floor; marine fossils; and the potential for farming in the oceans.

• Your child is learning more about the human body. Ask, "What happens when your heart beats?" Your child should have some basic knowledge about the circulatory system.

• See whether your child can find his or her own pulse. How about your pulse? Have your child measure your heartbeats. Ask, "What would happen if I ran a mile and then you measured again?"

• What does your child know about the effects of caffeine, tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, and heroin?

• See what your child knows about the digestive system. Ask, "How does food change as we digest it?"

• Together think about the many ways the idea of time comes up in everyday life. Take turns pointing it out. You might say, "I have time on my hands," and your child might say, "Once upon a time." See how many you can get.

• Ask why it isn't the same time everywhere in the world. Why, when it is 12 noon in Boston, is it 11 am in Chicago?

Grade 5 Tips for Parents

• Watch the television news together on occasion. Let the events on the news -- human interest stories, hurricanes, elections, and the peoples and circumstances of other countries -- become a basis for conversation. You might also watch documentaries about historical figures with your child; biography is a good basis for helping children learn about history. Such documentaries are becoming more common, especially on public television and certain cable networks. Documentary programs are also available on videocassette and can be checked out of libraries and rented from many video stores.

• Children in intermediate grades will notice and ask about the problems that they see around them: homelessness drugs, and conflict. It is good to talk about these issues. Ask your child whether he or she is discussing such topics in school. Does your child have unanswered questions?

• Look at photographs together. Family pictures showing you and your child at different ages are a good choice. Ask, "What can you remember about these earlier times? What is different now?" You will find that your child will not tire of looking at pictures of family members.

• Ask your child about how we know the actual shape of North America, South America, and the other countries. This is a way to see what your child understands about mapmaking, and it also offers an opportunity to discuss and examine maps and satellite photos of the earth.

• Using a map of the United States, discuss each region: its topography, its largest cities, its industries or economic activity, its population demographics, the historical events that happened there, and so on. You might start with a region where your family has lived in the past, or where a relative or friend lives, and then branch out into other regions.

• Have your child place various events into chronological order. Try the following events: the voyages of Christopher Columbus, the Mayflower Compact, the establishment of Jamestown Colony by the British, the Norse exploration of North America, and the development of Native American societies.

• The era of European exploration -- roughly the 15th through 18th centuries -- fascinates children. You and your child can discuss many questions related to this era: Why were the European governments so interested in exploring the world? What was Columbus's purpose in sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean? What did people know about the world when Columbus set sail? Why has Columbus become so controversial?

• Children study the American colonies in considerable detail in the fifth grade. There are many ways to get your child to share what he or she is learning. How Girls Bully
The Covert Tactics Used When Girls Bully

Most studies about bullying focus on boys as aggressors but girls can be bullies too and when girls bully it can be an entirely different beast. When we think of bullying we tend to think of physical violence and outward taunting but when girls bully their tactics are often quiet and covert.

Girls Who Bully Can Be Hard to Recognize

From the outside looking in it can be hard to tell a group of girls who are bullying apart from a group of girls who are innocently standing around. Girls socialize differently than boys. As girls get older their peer interactions become less physical and more cerebral. Girls engage in verbal bonding by sharing stories, hopes, and dreams. Since girls bond differently than boys it makes sense that when they bully it would be different too.

Teachers and parents tend to talk about the obvious when they talk about bullying. Playground scuffles, name calling, stealing personal items and damaging property are commonly cited examples of bullying behavior. But when girls bully they aren’t so obvious. Girls can be quietly vicious with their victims and adults often fail to treat their behavior as bullying.

Girls and Boys Do Not Bully the Same Ways

The tactics used by girls who bully are distorted versions of some normal mechanisms of social development. According to research done by Lagerspetz, Bjorqvist and Peltonen at the University of Miami, when girls bully they use things like alienation, ostracism, deliberate and calculated random exclusions, and spreading of rumors to harass their peers.

Girls get other kids to gang up on one or more peers as a way of exerting control. Sometimes they incite other children to act out aggressively and sit back to watch the show. They form groups that pick and choose members at random and exclude others without real reason. They form alliances with other social groups in an effort to jockey for popularity and positions of power among peers. All too often the bullying tactics used by girls are brushed off as cruel but normal social interactions.

In Girls, Bullying Behaviors and Peer Relationships: The Double Edged Sword of Exclusion and Rejection, Barbara Leckie explains how bullying by girls manifests itself and how it is handled by adults. Leckie went over numerous studies dating back as far as 1980 and identified the many different ways that girls bully. She also found that adults were slower to react to the bullying tactics used by girls.

Adults Can Be Slow to React to Girls Who Bully

If there is violence or physical acting out of any sort adults are quick to intervene and when necessary will punish offenders, but when the bullying takes on a less obvious form even adults don’t seem to know what to do. When girls bully it often goes unaddressed. Since adults don't always label the tactics used by girls as bullying kids who fall victim don’t know where to turn for help.

The mindset still exists that not all kids can be friends and the social structure of the school system encourages the formation of groups and reinforces the idea of social hierarchies. This makes many adults slow to recognize things like exclusion and alienation as something sinister. These behaviors are often dismissed as an unfortunate part of the normal formation of peer groups.

While it is normal for girls and boys to form social groups and close bonds with certain people at the exclusion of others it becomes bullying when those groups make power plays over other groups or individuals. Having friends is one thing; having friends who work to make others feel that they are not good enough to be included is another. Playing the popularity game in a way that causes fear or inadequacy in others is a form of bullying and it is a common tactic used by girls.

Girls Bully in Packs

Sadly, good kids who know better go along with these types of popularity power games for fear of being singled out and cast out of the group. Since adults often treat this exclusionary behavior as mere social clashing kids who are caught in the middle are afraid to stand up to the bully. It seems easier to do nothing than it does to do the right thing.

Kids who quietly go along with a bully add to the bully's power by giving victims the illusion that the bully has peer support. The victim feels like everybody is against them, not just the bully. When adults do not address exclusionary behavior the same way they would address more traditionally forms of bullying it worsens the problem. Kids who know better feel powerless to do the right thing when adults don’t react.

Girls who bully will pick on boys as well as other girls. They act out as consistently as boys who bully and pick their targets in much the same way. While girls have been known to get violent when they bully it is much more common for them to use emotional tactics.

How Girls Bully

Girls bully by using emotional violence. They do things that make others feel alienated and alone. Some of the tactics used by girls who bully include:

anonymous prank phone calls or harassing emails from dummy accounts
playing jokes or tricks designed to embarrass and humiliate
deliberate exclusion of other kids for no real reason
whispering in front of other kids with the intent to make them feel left out
name calling, rumor spreading and other malicious verbal interactions
being friends one week and then turning against a peer the next week with no incident or reason for the alienation
encouraging other kids to ignore or pick on a specific child
inciting others to act out violently or aggressively

Boys are not the only bullies, girls bully too. Being singled out, ridiculed, excluded, or alienated is a form of bullying. Being beaten up emotionally on a daily basis does damage to the victims. It is time that the problem was addressed for what it is, a gender difference in bullying but bullying none-the-less.

Why Do Bullies Act That Way?

Some bullies are looking for attention. They might think bullying is a way to be popular or to get what they want. Most bullies are trying to make themselves feel more important. When they pick on someone else, it can make them feel big and powerful.

Some bullies come from families where everyone is angry and shouting all the time. They may think that being angry, calling names, and pushing people around is a normal way to act. Some bullies are copying what they've seen someone else do. Some have been bullied themselves.

Sometimes bullies know that what they are doing or saying hurts other people. But other bullies may not really know how hurtful their actions can be. Most bullies don't understand or care about the feelings of others.

Bullies often pick on someone they think they can have power over. They might pick on kids who get upset easily or who have trouble sticking up for themselves. Getting a big reaction out of someone can make bullies feel like they have the power they want. Sometimes bullies pick on someone who is smarter than they are or different from them in some way. Sometimes bullies just pick on a kid for no reason at all.

I am a firm believer in providing extra credit opportunities throughout the year and even on a daily basis. At least once per day a student will ask me a question that I either do not have time to answer,being that it is off topic, or that I am unable to answer. When this arises I tell the student to look it up, print or write it out, and get back to us tomorrow. If they chose to do this, which no one has yet, I will give them a little boost to their grade in that particular subject. I'm not talking about bumping a grade from a C- to an A but I will give them a few extra points.

I also provide extra credit opportunities on most tests.

If your child receives a failing grade on a test. They may retake it for a chance to improve their grade. The highest they may receive on the retake is a 70%.

So you're child is taking the guinea pigs home over the weekend and you're asking.... WHAT DO I DO WITH THEM?

Nilla and Oreo are very friendly. They are quite skittish until they become familiar with your scent and daily routine. Nilla tends to scream when she is being taken out of the cage. You are not hurting her, she is just a little dramatic.

HOW DO I HOLD THEM?

Support the entire body. Wrap one hand securely around the chest. Restrain one front leg by placing a finger in front of it. Use your other hand to support the hind feet and rump. Holding them close to the body helps them to feel secure and supported.

HOW DO I CLEAN UP AFTER THEM?

Well :) you shouldn't have to. Your child will do all of the dirty work!

1. Take the everything out of the cage.

2. Take the girls out of the cage and place them in their sacks and in a safe location.

3. Take off the white part of the cage.

4. Wash out the green bowl and fill the water bottle.

5. Fill up the food bowl.

6. Fold the paper bags in on each side until each end is touching.

7. Remove the soiled bundle of paper from the cage and throw away.

8. Scrub the cage with a cleaning product and then throughly wash out as to not leave any residue behind.

9. After the base of the cage is DRY add in two opened up paper bags so that they overlap and go up the sides of the walls.

10. Next add several sheets of newspaper (more is better) and overlap them throughout the base of the cage.

11. Add in shredded paper and timothy hay.

12. Place the white portion of the cage back on the base.

13. Add in the flat green pieces and the food.

14. Place the water bottle on the cage and the green bowl underneath the spout to prevent water from dripping all over the cage.

15. Return Nilla and Oreo to their cage.

WHAT DO THEY EAT?

Your child will be sent home a sufficient supply of food and timothy hay. If you would like to supplement their diet you may try some of the following items. CAUTION- everything must be cut up in small pieces no wider than a dime and no thicker than a ritz cracker. Leafy greens should be cut in strips *see photo of Oreo eating greens above*. This is to prevent choking.

A serving of vegetables and fruit would be a small handful.

PTA meeting

I had the pleasure of attending the first PTA meeting of the school year tonight. There was a fabulous turn out of more than twenty parents! There were at least two parents from every grade level represented at the meeting. I highly recommend attending at least one meeting during the school year. It is a great way to meet and get to know other parents as well as provide your input and ideas!

What does everyone talk about at PTA meetings?

Here is a summary of our discussion this evening.

*Lisa Neumayer from Saint John's Health Center came by to raise awareness of the serious need for blood donors. She brought up the idea of hosting a blood drive at Saint Anne. Blood drives last approximately 4-6 hours and require a minimum of 30 participants. We can easily meet that goal if four parents from each class gave blood.

*There is still a major call for new families at Saint Anne. We need to increase our enrollment. Part of boosting enrollment is developing a plan that involves parent participation. Our wonderful Marketing Director Carol O'Day has been pushing to have Saint Anne recognized in the local newspapers for the outstanding achievements we have made and amazing programs that we offer. Radio Guadalupe will begin a radio campaign advertising Saint Anne on October 5 that will run for two weeks.

*Saint Anne School is trying to go GREEN! The weekly newsletter should have arrived in your inbox this morning!

*If your child has out grown their school uniform please send it in to school. Monica Martin (1st Grade Parent) is coordinating a gently used uniform recycling program. More information to follow.
